St Andrews on the coastline of the East Neuk of Fife is a special place to me, being the home of my alma mata and where I spent five wonderful student years. The town itself is full of history with both castle and cathedral ruins, cobbled streets and beautiful beaches. This shot was taken from the pier near to the harbour in the evening glow.</image:caption>

Probably the most photographed church in Kent! This pretty church originally dates back to the 13th Century and once served the village of Fairfield, which no longer exists, but (at the time of writing) a monthly Sunday morning service is still held. This was taken on a June evening making use of the foreground grasses in the composition.

There is a rather funny story behind this shot. I had researched the location of this spot and the particularly photogenic tree near Settle in the Yorkshire Dales and had been longing to get here. However a field full of cows and a bull almost made me turn back! I barely managed to get my camera and tripod set up before quickly grabbing a few shots (with the bull glaring at me) and running back to the car!</image:caption>

An early morning alarm woke me to get up for the sunrise in the picturesque coastal town of Piran. Whilst the sunset didn't bring much, I enjoyed photographing the harbour and Tartini Square at dawn with its twinkling lights. The town lies on Slovenia's short stretch of coastline along the Adriatic Sea and Croatia can be seen to the south. Once owned and used as a port for several centuries by the Venetians, walking around the town you could easily think you were in Venice, with its narrow cobbled streets!</image:caption>

This image needs little introduction; it is of course the beautiful Taj Mahal, taken in the soft morning light. After getting up at 5.30am to be third in the queue outside the East Gate, I was not expecting the sun to make any appearance given the forecast of rain. At around 8am the sun gradually started to break through the cloud enabling me to capture this shot. It is amazing how the white marble displays a different tone throughout the day as the light changes.</image:caption>

I almost didn't want to get out of the car due to gale force winds and horizontal rain, but I had wanted to get a shot of these boats on the shore of Derwentwater near Keswick for a long time! It had to be a quick handheld 'point and shoot' as within seconds the raindrops were covering my filters. Even though it wasn't ideal conditions, I do love the atmosphere in this, with the mist and clouds swirling around Catbells in the distance. Even the poor duck in the foreground was trying its best to find shelter!</image:caption>

This area of the Jurassic Coast in Dorset has geological significance and is frequently visited by school children to learn about coastal erosion. I'll never forget this evening, arriving at Wast Water a good hour and a half before sunset. I had hoped for some sun to light up the scree-covered hillsides, but whilst it wasn't meant to be, there was something quite special - there was no wind and it felt so tranquil and peaceful. I enjoyed being able to spend time finding lots of different compositions and this turned out to be my favourite.

Whilst visiting the Peak District for a few days in October 2020 my wet weather plan was to take a trip to Padley Gorge for the renowned Autumn colour - well, it didn't disappoint! It rained all afternoon and I had to carefully set up my tripod, camera and filters all whilst holding an umbrella to prevent raindrops. It was great fun to get some long exposures of the water as it tumbled over rocks down the gorge. A magical place.

This was a stormy evening at Durdle Door, but exhilarating to be down on the beach completely by myself with the waves crashing on the pebbles. The light was looking good after an initial miserable start to the day, so at the risk of being blown away, I went high to take advantage of the fleeting light as it moved across the hills, at times illuminating the infamous castle. Staying at Hacienda Cusin high up in the Ecuadorian Andes near the town of Otavalo, I had a wonderful view of the Imbabura Volcano, which gives its name to the surrounding region and last erupted in 5550 BC. When I was planning my tour around Morocco, I knew I just had to see the Sahara Desert, one of the natural wonders of the world. Having stayed overnight at a traditional Berber Camp, I awoke early to capture this shot just after sunrise, when the sun, being still low in the sky, cast long shadows across the dunes, capturing all the different shapes and ripples in the sand.</image:caption>

It was bitterly cold standing on this ridge waiting for the sun as it rose over the hills and cast its light into the valley. I had eyed up this composition a few evenings before and anticipated that something like this would happen and I was not disappointed! I took a number of shots of the fleeting light, but particularly like this one with Chrome Hill illuminated and Parkhouse Hill looking a bit more ominous with its spikey peak.</image:caption>

This is my favourite shot of St Andrews and I will never forget taking it! It was a cold and very blustery November afternoon and the sand was being blown across the beach, catching the light. I chose to use the ripples as lead-in lines.

Saddleworth is an area comprising a collection of villages on the Lancashire-Yorkshire border, with quaint stone villages nestled in the valleys and vast moorland above. It's a lovely area and I may be biased as it’s where I grew up! Two main features of the Saddleworth landscape from its industrial heritage are captured in this image; the trans-Pennine railway and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, both historically important in the transport of goods over the moors.</image:caption>

I was extremely fortunate (read, planned in advance) to have this view of The Capitolio building from the balcony of the Casa Particular (B&B) I was staying in. From the first few days I knew the best time to capture it would be in the afternoon whilst illuminated by the evening sunshine, so on arriving back in Havana at around 4.30pm from a short stay in Vinales, I knew this was the moment I had been waiting for!</image:caption>

It was a bit of a rush to get here after a four long drive to Somerset that afternoon with several delays along the way, but I acted on my hunch to get to the coast for sunset. Arriving literally as the sun was setting, I parked up, ran over the dunes and quickly set up my tripod to capture the moody sky above the lighthouse. The sea was rough but the long exposure has smoothed out the waves and allowed the light to be reflected on the wet sand.</image:caption>

Fes is famous for its leather production, still using traditional methods and natural dyes to retain its renowned high quality leather goods. It is thought that this particular tannery could date back to the 9th Century AD when the city of Fes was founded. The animal hides are softened and dyed in huge round vessels surrounding the floor of the tannery, containing urine and pigeon faeces as well as various coloured dyes. Tip: if you ever visit, make sure to take a nose peg or failing that, a sprig of mint!</image:caption>

Taken in December 2014 as the winter mist rolled across Venice's lagoon at dawn. It was amazing watching it swirl around and at one point I could barely see beyond the end of the parked gondolas, let alone the church of San Giorgio Maggiore in the distance. Quite eerie seeing just the lights of the boats as they passed by.</image:caption>
